Mass Timber 2030: Preparing Your Practice

Interested in designing with mass timber, but unsure how to incorporate it into your toolbox? Hear from three AEC leaders—an architect, a developer, and an engineer—regarding their unique role in the project pipeline and their expertise with specifying mass timber and hybrid building systems. In this session, our AEC professionals will collaborate to answer questions like, “How can architects help convince clients to consider mass timber building systems for their projects?” and “How does a mass timber building system impact ROI (through construction timeline savings, leasing rates, and tenant wellness) in ways that can help drive decision making?” The session will discuss how mass timber can help clients and communities achieve sustainability goals and boost occupant wellness, how mass timber can be incorporated into your design practice, and what you need to know going in. In addition, the session will provide insight into the experience of designing with wood, including how it meets life safety and fire code requirements and can make building in certain conditions more affordable. Through real-world case studies and a live Q+A, learn from these experts about how you can overcome the headwinds toward broader mass timber adoption in the design process to explore using this low-carbon structural material to build a more sustainable built environment.

By the end of the course, you will be able to do the following:

• Analyze current and future trends around mass timber systems and their impact on sustainable design.
• Examine a variety of mass timber applications, including hybrid structures, and the impact these buildings have on enhancing the health, safety, and welfare of the occupants.
• Compare and contrast the experiences of three well-known AEC leaders and how specifying mass timber and hybrid structural systems has positively influenced the lived experience of occupants within these buildings.
