Timber is no longer a niche topic—it’s a core competency firms are actively seeking from architects. Yet many architecture programs lack the curriculum, materials, or faculty expertise to prepare their students to keep pace. In partnership with Think Wood, the University of Washington (UW)’s Center for Timber Innovation in the Built Environment (CTIBE) aims to deepen faculty experience and knowledge of mass timber by moving beyond the classroom setting. Cal Poly Mass Timber Construction Management Faculty Workshop
Mass timber is moving from niche applications into mainstream construction, and it’s incumbent on construction management programs to prepare students for the projects, jobsites, and delivery models they will encounter after graduation. Theory in Practice: Timber Workshop For Educators in Cortaccia, Italy
In June 2026, 35 architecture, engineering, and construction management faculty from across the U.S. traveled to Cortaccia, Italy, where a centuries-old timber-building region has become home to some of the most advanced timber technology in Europe. Over three days at Rothoblaas’s headquarters, the workshop combined technical instruction, laboratory demonstrations, and full-scale mock-up building to turn advanced timber knowledge into classroom-ready teaching. Inside Clemson University’s Workshop: Equipping Faculty to Teach Timber Engineering
In June 2026, Clemson University’s Wood Utilization + Design Institute (WU+D) welcomed 30 civil engineering faculty from across the country for a workshop built around a primary goal: helping faculty not only understand wood design, but confidently teach it to the students in their programs. North Carolina State University Design Build Studio Sponsorship
Recently, 14 graduate and upper-level undergraduate students from the School of Architecture at North Carolina State University (NCSU) had the opportunity to design and build The Floating Grove—an outdoor classroom pavilion constructed with mass timber—in collaboration with the NCSU Sustainability Stewards, the College of Natural Resources, and the College of Design. BuildFest 2: Peace Rises
From September 10-14, 2025, more than 150 students and faculty members converged on the grounds of the 1969 Woodstock music festival in Bethel, New York, for BuildFest 2: Peace Rises. Over five days, participants camped, collaborated, and created on the historic site as they explored how wood building systems can advance principles of sustainability and efficiency in the built environment. Buildfest 2024
BuildFest 2024—part of the Bethel Woods Art & Architecture Festival, an annual event promoting sustainability and community engagement with students and educators—challenged participants to explore the evolving relationship between digital and analog fabrication.
