Timber Engineering Faculty Development Workshop
As mass timber and hybrid structures become more common in commercial construction, engineering programs are seeing growing interest from students—and the AEC firms that will one day employ them —in wood design. Many faculty are looking for practical ways to introduce light-frame wood and mass timber topics into existing structures, materials, and design courses or create new standalone courses. Administrators Workshop: Integrating Mass Timber Across the Architecture Curriculum
At the University of Arkansas, 25 administrators from architecture programs across the U.S. engaged in a Think Wood-sponsored workshop to deepen their understanding of mass timber. The group brainstormed ways to align wood topics with student learning outcomes, envisioning a model curriculum to bring a well-rounded wood education to their classrooms. 2025 Timber Design Faculty Development Workshop
In June 2025, Think Wood invited 26 early-career engineering faculty from 24 universities across the U.S. to attend the Timber Design Faculty Development Workshop, hosted by Clemson University’s Glenn Department of Civil Engineering and Wood Utilization and Design Institute (WU+D). The hands-on program addressed the full value chain of light-frame and mass timber construction—from sustainable forestry to lumber production and glulam fabrication—to equip engineering faculty attendees with information and tools to map out syllabi that they can use to introduce or bolster the wood design education of students at their own institutions. 2025 Timber Architecture Design Faculty Development Workshop
In May 2025, 25 tenure-track professors from 23 accredited architecture programs across the U.S. came together to experience the full “forest-to-frame” supply chain at the 2025 Timber Architecture Design Faculty Workshop, co-hosted by Auburn University’s Mass Timber Collaborative and Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects. North Carolina State University Design Build Studio Sponsorship
Recently, 14 graduate and upper-level undergraduate students from the School of Architecture at North Carolina State University (NCSU) had the opportunity to design and build The Floating Grove—an outdoor classroom pavilion constructed with mass timber—in collaboration with the NCSU Sustainability Stewards, the College of Natural Resources, and the College of Design. From September 10-14, 2025, more than 150 students and faculty members converged on the grounds of the 1969 Woodstock music festival in Bethel, New York, for BuildFest 2: Peace Rises. Over five days, participants camped, collaborated, and created on the historic site as they explored how wood building systems can advance principles of sustainability and efficiency in the built environment. Buildfest 2024
BuildFest 2024—part of the Bethel Woods Art & Architecture Festival, an annual event promoting sustainability and community engagement with students and educators—challenged participants to explore the evolving relationship between digital and analog fabrication.
