Tenure-track faculty at accredited architecture programs in the United States are invited to explore the potential of mass timber in architectural education through an intensive, fully funded workshop. From May 28-30, 2025, Auburn University’s Mass Timber Collaborative will host an immersive three-day Timber Architecture Design Faculty Development Workshop in collaboration with Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects and Rural Studio. Sponsored by Think Wood and the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, the workshop will balance practice and academia to provide architecture faculty with a holistic understanding of mass timber construction—including its life-cycle components, design flexibility, engineering innovations, and its potential to significantly reduce environmental impact.

Participants will gain hands-on experience with mass timber through educational sessions, site visits to mass timber buildings (both completed and under construction), as well as tours of an active forestry harvesting operation, a state-of-the-art sawmill, and a CLT production and fabrication facility. By bringing together the themes of architecture, forestry, engineering, and construction, the Timber Architecture Design Faculty Development Workshop aims to arm participating educators with the resources to teach courses incorporating mass timber to their students in a way  that’s founded in practice and facilitates creative explorations of design possibilities. Travel expenses for faculty attendees are covered as part of their participation.

The application period for this particular workshop is now closed, but Think Wood sponsors several such workshops each year. Contact us at education@thinkwood.com if you’d like to be notified about future workshop opportunities.
