Timber is no longer a niche topic—it’s a core competency firms are actively seeking from architects. Yet many architecture programs lack the curriculum, materials, or faculty expertise to prepare their students to keep pace. In partnership with Think Wood, the University of Washington (UW)’s Center for Timber Innovation in the Built Environment (CTIBE) aims to deepen faculty experience and knowledge of mass timber by moving beyond the classroom setting. Through building tours, working forest visits, and hands-on learning from expert practitioners, Think Wood and the CTIBE are equipping architecture faculty to bring more relevant, real-world mass timber content into their teaching.
That work takes shape this fall through an intensive Timber Architecture Faculty Development Workshop on September 9–12, 2026—a fully funded, three-day program for faculty from accredited architecture schools across the U.S. who are interested in bringing mass timber innovation into the classroom.
Over three days, participants will:
Led by UW-affiliated faculty alongside practitioners from StructureCraft, atelierjones, Weber Thompson, and LMN, the workshop covers timber materials, structural systems, connection detailing, and strategies for weaving mass timber content into both seminar and design studio settings.
Workshop costs, lodging, and meals are complimentary for workshop attendees. Travel expenses (airfare, transportation) will be reimbursed after the workshop concludes.
Applications are due June 15, 2026, with attendee confirmation by June 30, 2026. Faculty interested in advancing mass timber education, expanding their real-world mass timber knowledge, and connecting with peers and industry leaders are encouraged to apply through the University of Washington’s workshop page.
